A Menopause Makeover with Dr. Antimarino
Posted September 21, 2020
Menopause marks the end of a woman’s menstrual cycle and a decrease in the production of estrogen and progesterone. Most women begin to see hormonal changes to their bodies beginning in their late 40’s, which may last for several years. Just as puberty created many changes, both physically and emotionally, menopause can have the same effect. The types of symptoms that women experience vary widely as does the severity and length of time they are present.
Women will experience changes in their bodies that they cannot control through diet and exercise alone. The conversations are very similar among women, that their exercise and eating habits have not changed but now, since menopause, they see an increase in weight distribution. This may be evident in the abdomen, thighs, mid to upper back, upper arms, and pubic region.
Liposuction
Weight gain is especially common to the upper part of the stomach, between the umbilicus and rib cage which can be uncomfortable when sitting or wearing fitted clothing. Liposuction is a common procedure that is used to remove excess fatty tissue on the body. Hormonal weight gain can be addressed using Liposuction with excellent results.
Fat Transfer to the Breast
Changes occur in the breast tissue as well; some may see a loss of volume while others may have an increase in the size and shape of the breasts. A breast lift may be needed to reshape and recontour the breasts. A breast reduction can be used to address an increase in volume because of hormonal changes.
Brachioplasty
This procedure reduces excess sagging skin, reduces pockets of fat in the upper arms, and tightens underlying tissue that defines the shape of the arm.
How Menopause Affects the Face
Although changes in the body shape are common, the biggest change that women see is the changes to their skin, especially in their faces. The first signs of aging commonly occur in the mid to late 40s- early 50s. The most notable complaints are thinning of the skin and texture issues, loss of facial volume, hollowing, and extra skin in the neck and eyelids. Many women say that they have lost the luster of their skin which makes them look and feel old. Almost every woman that I see during menopause states the changes they are seeing has a significant impact on their body image, self-esteem, and confidence levels.
Face Lift
Excess skin to the face and neck area along with a decrease in volume are common concerns for women as they age. A Face Lift or Neck Lift can be used to surgically remove the excess skin and a fat transfer can be used to add volume to areas that look hollow.
Neck Lift
A Neck Lift is performed to enhance the jawline and create more definition. As the skin around our jawline and on our neck begins to loosen, women experience more skin sagging around this area and this is often one of the first places we see signs of aging. This procedure removes excess skin and restores definition around the jawbone.
Injectables
Injectables are a non-surgical option that can also be used to add volume throughout the early stages of aging.
Blepharoplasty
A blepharoplasty, or eye lid surgery can be done to address hooding or excess skin to the eyes. As we age, the skin around our eyes loosens and can make them appear small and dull. Patients come in complaining of looking tired or older. This procedure removes excess skin on the eyelids, rejuvenated the eys, and improves vision, and creates a more youthful and rested appearance. Eyelid surgery can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelid using incisions just below the lower or upper lash line.
Aesthetics Center
Due to hormonal changes, the skin, especially on the face, begins to lose elasticity and the texture changes. Many women say they have lost the luster and glow that they used to have which makes them look and feel old. Devices like our Tetra CO2 laser, our Subnovii Plasma Pen, or some of our other aesthetic devices are commonly used to alleviate wrinkles and fine lines, tighten the skin, improve skin texture and tone and reduce scars and blemishes. Collagen production can also be stimulated, and damaged skin removed to reveal younger, healthier skin. Our Motus AX device is unlike any other laser treatment available for permanent hair reduction. Women going through menopause often target around their jawline and upper lip.
