How can I find the right surgeon?
Posted April 27, 2017
HB of Pittsburgh asks: After months of research I have recently made the decision to have a tummy tuck. Now I am ready to move forward with choosing my surgeon but I am overwhelmed with all of the information available through various websites. How would you recommend I find the right surgeon to perform my operation?
Dr. Antimarino:
Thank you, HB, for your question. First let me say, it is great to hear that you have done your research. This is an important step when moving forward with any surgical consultation. Research should include not only the procedure but also the surgeon, the office and the surgical facility where the procedure will be performed.
Is your surgeon board certified?
The most important qualification to look for in a surgeon would be board certification in plastic surgery and a membership with the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. A board certification ensures that they have completed an approved residency in plastic surgery and they have satisfied the knowledge base that is required by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Experience in Your Chosen Procedure?
It is important to inquire about your surgeon’s experience. When you are looking for experience in a specific area be sure to ask how long the surgeon has trained in that field and how many times he has performed the procedure.
Review his portfolio
As you research your surgeon remember to review his work by looking at photos of patients he has previously done work on. This can help you with the expectations of your own procedure. Discuss with your surgeon how you expect to look after your procedure and he or she can determine the best surgical plan of action.
Comfortable Communication
Never settle for a surgeon who leaves you feeling uneasy or unsure. This is your body and you should be comfortable with the surgeon of your choice. Never feel rushed to make a decision until you are absolutely confident in moving forward.
To assist my patients with their surgical consultation I have included on our website a SURGEONS CHECKLIST. This is a simple tool designed to help with the research process. It provides a checklist to be completed with important information regarding the surgeon, the office, and the surgery center. It is in the patients best interest to educate themselves and do their research.
