Connecting with your Surgeon

While it is important for the doctor to listen to the patient’s concerns and goals, it is equally as important for the patient to listen to the doctor as to what would be a reasonable and realistic outcome. Plastic surgeons find that social media often distorts the reality of what is physically possible with plastic surgery. Social media can create unrealistic expectations for the patient before their consultation. It is extremely important to discuss your expectations with the surgeon and listen to their opinion based on their examination, experience, and skills regarding your potential outcome.
Bringing in photos can be helpful in showing the surgeon what your goals are visually. The more descriptive the patient is, the better the surgeon can visualize the results you would like to achieve. Viewing your photos with the surgeon during your consultation allows for open conversation and the ability to view the areas you wish to address together. The surgeon can go over realistic improvements or results you can expect to see post-operatively. A consultation exam also allows for a discussion on scars and where they will be after surgery. The surgeon should demonstrate exactly where your scars will be to decrease any unexpected outcomes. Connecting with the surgeon is an important piece of the consultation, so the patient and surgeon have confidence in working together to achieve success.
