Cosmetic Surgeons vs. Plastic Surgeons in Pittsburgh: What’s the Difference?
When you’re searching around for a plastic surgeon in Pittsburgh, you might be unaware that there is a difference between the two terms. The truth is that both are physicians but plastic surgeons are specialists in their field. You will want to make sure the doctor you choose is the right one when you are ready to have a procedure. But is there really a difference between cosmetic and plastic surgeons? The answer is certainly yes, and here are a few of the credentials that you need to watch out for:
Credentials and Specialties of Plastic Surgeons in Pittsburgh
Plastic surgery is essentially an umbrella term that covers repairing parts of the body and cosmetic procedures. Breast augmentations, breast implants, breast reductions and facial procedures are done by a plastic surgeon. Other procedures performed under plastic surgeons include tissue transfer and even injury repair. While plastic surgery can be cosmetic in nature, it can also serve the purpose of helping to reconstruct the body. Think of circumstances such as birth defects, including cleft lips and other deformities.
Furthermore, plastic surgeons can also help with issues such as dog bites, burns, and other traumatic injuries to the body.
Plastic surgeons are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This means that the doctor completed medical school and served between 3-to-6 years of residency. After this completion, the surgeon must complete an addition 2-to-3 years in a plastic surgery residency program with intense oral and written exams completed thereafter.
What about Cosmetic Surgeons?
Cosmetic surgery is a general term. It means a specialty that focuses on aesthetic procedures of the body where a patient may be generally unsatisfied. A lot of cosmetic procedures are performed for aesthetic purposes, although they can certainly help boost self-esteem and allow Pittsburgh patients to live better lives.
Cosmetic surgeons are not Plastic surgeons. Keep in mind that the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery is not the same certifying process as the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The American Board of Medical Specialties does not recognize the ABCS as a certifying board.
