Debunking Common Plastic Surgery Misconceptions

Let’s Talk about Compression Garments
Due to excellent marketing campaigns, compression garment companies give the impression to patients that without the use of their particular garment, their surgery results would not be as successful. The fact is that the actual contouring is being done at the time of surgery by the surgeon.
Compression garments are helpful in controlling swelling and giving support. They also help to minimize discomfort associated with swelling. However, they do not impact the final outcome of surgery. I am a firm believer in the usage of compression garments, but I do not think patients need to spend excessive amounts of money for high end compression garments when they can get the same results using different brands.
Taking Collagen Supplements to Help Improve Healing
Collagen supplements for surgery are a common misconception. The truth is that there are no definitive studies that show any significant improvement in the rate of healing, quality of scarring, or improvement in tissue. I would recommend eating a healthy diet before and after surgery. Be sure to consume 60-70g of protein daily in the postoperative period for 3-4 weeks and allow for adequate hydration.
