Q&A: Deciding Your Implant Size
Posted June 24, 2019
One of the most frequently asked questions Dr. Antimarino receives about breast augmentations is, “How do I decide on the right size of implants?
Forget the Cup Sizes
First, I feel it is important to not classify a woman’s breast volume as a “cup size”. Cup sizes are not uniform amongst bra manufacturers or across different styles of bras so it is virtually impossible to create a breast that would match a single, specific cup size. Rather, it is better to create the volume of a breast that best fits the woman’s body habitus as well as meets her desired results. Whatever bra size fits that volume is the appropriate bra and the letter associated with the cup size, then becomes irrelevant.
Implant Diameters
Second, the implant should not be wider than the woman’s natural breast diameter. As the implant volume increases, so does the diameter. When the implant becomes wider than the woman’s breast, it has a higher risk of moving toward the armpit, below the breast pocket or “bottoming out”. It will also give the woman a top-heavy appearance that is less than desirable for a natural result.
Gaining Accurate Measurements
Third, placing implant sizers in a sports bra under a shirt can give a very accurate measurement as to what the woman would look like in her clothing with an augmentation. She can then try on different sizes of implants to choose her desired “look.”
Implant Styles
Fourth, there are several styles of implants ranging from less projected to more projection and fullness. The experience of the surgeon will help guide the patient to which style of implant is best suited for her and her lifestyle.
As a board-certified plastic surgeon, I would encourage any woman who is considering breast augmentation to do her research and ask questions when meeting with the surgeon. Board certification does not necessarily mean board certified in plastic surgery and a cosmetic surgeon may not mean they have adequate credentials. You should feel comfortable with both the surgeon and their staff as they will be caring for you throughout your surgical experience.
