Botox
What is Botox? Botox is a neuromuscular toxin that is FDA approved for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to fine lines that develop across the forehead, between the eyebrows, crow’s feet, and around the mouth. Botox temporarily weakens the muscles that cause those wrinkles.
How do I prepare for Botox?
1. Is your provider adequately trained?
When considering Botox or any other cosmetic procedure, do your research! It is important to know the qualifications of your injector. Your procedure should be done in an accredited medical spa that is clean and well maintained.
2. Be comfortable with your provider
Your provider should educate you on your procedure and answer any questions you may have prior to beginning your treatment. Feel comfortable asking how many times they have performed the procedure and ask to view previous patient photos. Communication is key!
Know what to expect:
1. How much product is needed to achieve the desired results?
Botox is measured in units and functions per the number of units injected in an area. Each person’s muscle strength can vary, therefore, the amount of Botox required is subjective. Each patient is evaluated individually for the areas of animation and strength of the muscle pull. The stronger the muscle action the more Botox is needed to weaken the muscle.
2. Does it hurt to have Botox?
The truth is that everyone has a different threshold of pain. Some patients have no pain at all, while others describe the pain as minimal. Botox is a simple office procedure that takes minutes to perform, with no downtime and visibly improved results. No anesthetic or numbing medicine is required and the needle is very small. Some patients say they hear a crackling sound during the injection but that is normal and the treatment is relatively pain-free. Red spots or mild swelling at the injection sites are not uncommon but should disappear prior to leaving the appointment. Some patients may experience mild bruising but this is usually gone within a few days. Results can take up to a few days to become visible and a two week follow up appointment is scheduled for new patients.
3. Is there a difference when treating men vs. women?
There is no significant difference in treating men and women with Botox. Men generally want a masculine appearing forehead with a gentler elevation of the brows, while women want a strong elevation to create a high arch to their eyebrows. Men also typically tend to bruise less than women.
4. How long does Botox last?
Results can take up to a few days to become visible and a two week follow up appointment is scheduled for evaluation with new patients. The effect of Botox will last usually 3-4 months for both men and women and there is no difference in downtime.
