Lip Augmentation: Lip Injections Using Dermal Fillers
What is a Lip Augmentation?
Lip augmentation is just another way of saying “lip injections.” Lip augmentation is a non-surgical, cosmetic procedure that uses dermal filler to enhance the lips. If you have ever been concerned about the size of your lips, lip augmentation is a viable and easy solution to help you feel confident with your smile.
Juvederm for Lip Injections
There are various types of products that can be used in the lips and around the mouth such as Juvederm and Restylane. Fat transfers can also be done to add fullness. All of our injectable dermal fillers are FDA approved. These particular dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body. The fillers last a lot longer than the previously used collagen fillers.
ARE LIP INJECTIONS TEMPORARY OR PERMANENT?
Lip augmentation using dermal fillers will not last forever. The effects of hyaluronic acid fillers tend to last approximately months. After that, more injections during a follow-up appointment are needed to keep the volume of the lips.
Benefits of lip injections
Lip injections offer a wide-range of benefits, especially if you are someone who feels their smile could use a boost.
Benefits of lip augmentation include:
- Added volume
- Enhanced lip shape
- Fuller, plumper lips
Lip injections can improve deflated upper lips, uneven lips, and lip lines. Older patients often seek lip injections to smooth out their lips while also adding definition, and mild volume, or other subtle changes. Younger patients typically focus on volume.
Additionally, there are plenty of benefits that stem from using hyaluronic acid fillers as opposed to collagen.
With hyaluronic acid fillers, the nurse injector or board certified plastic surgeon has control over how much lip volume is created. Injections can be given gradually over a span of follow up appointments until the desired results are achieved. With hyaluronic acid fillers, expect less bruising and longer lasting results.
An allergic reaction is less likely to occur when using dermal fillers like Juvederm and Restylane.
What is it like to undergo lip augmentation?
Lip injections can be done quickly in the office with little to no downtown. First, we will apply a topical numbing cream to the lips to numb the area and ease discomfort. We will use a very small needle to inject the dermal fillers into your lips. Post-injection we encourage using ice to control swelling.
Your lips will swell – but don’t panic! Over the course of a few days (typically around 2-4 days), the swelling of your lips will decrease to your desired result and will start to feel more natural.
You should avoid lipstick and other lip products immediately following the procedure.
Are there side effects of lip augmentation?
As with anything, there is always the chance of side effects or risks. It’s always best to ask these questions and voice your concerns with the aesthetic provider during your initial consultation.
Some side effects include:
- Bleeding from the injection sites
- Swelling and bruising
- Redness and tenderness at the site of the injection
- Reactivation of cold sores or fever blisters (herpes simplex) of the lips or area surrounding the lips
Although there is a very small chance of a serious side effect occurring, few patients may experience the following effects:
- Prolonged swelling or bruising (lasting longer than 4 days)
- Infection
- Ulceration, scarring, or stifftening of the lips
- Lip asymmetry
