Restylane is an FDA approved injectable filler, made from hyaluronic acid, and is used to restore volume and enhance shape and definition to the face or lips to achieve a more youthful and balanced appearance.
How do I prepare for my Restylane treatment?
There are several important precautions to discuss with your provider to ensure the best results and avoid any complications. Please discuss with your provider:
- If you are taking immunosuppressive medications
- If you are taking aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or any other medication that affects bleeding
- If you have any questions about precautions related to the treatment, contact your provider. They will be happy to address any concerns you have.
1. Is Your Provider Adequately Trained?
When considering Restylane or any other cosmetic procedure, DO YOUR RESEARCH! It is important to find a skilled injector who is knowledgeable about the different products and what they are best used for. They should be comfortable talking with you about the best choice of product that will help achieve your desired results. Your procedure should be done in an accredited medical spa that is clean and well maintained.
2. Be Comfortable with Your Provider
It is important to discuss your medical history with your provider. Your provider will discuss potential side effects from the injection of Restylane and follow up care. You should inform your provider of any previous surgical or non-surgical aesthetic treatments.
Know what to expect:
First, the provider will disinfect and clean the area to be treated. A fine needle or blunt micro-cannula is used to inject the product into the skin. After the injection, your provider may gently massage the treated area to even out the result.
1. Is the treatment painful?
The truth is that everyone’s pain threshold is different. Some people may have no pain while others may experience the procedure as a mild discomfort. Many Restylane products contain an integrated local anesthetic, lidocaine, to provide you with more comfortable treatment experience. Your provider may also use a topical numbing cream to provide additional comfort measures. Ice packs can also be used to decrease swelling and provide pain relief.
2. Are the results immediate?
The results of Restylane are visible immediately. Patients may experience mild swelling or bruising, redness or tenderness to the treatment area post procedure. This should be resolved within a few days to one week. There is no downtime with this treatment.
3. How long do the results last?
The results of Restylane last approximately 8-12 months and gradually diminish with time. Results may vary depending on treatment areas, patients activity level, and metabolism. The product will generally last longer in those areas treated with minimal movements, such as under the eyes (tear trough).
