Temporal Augmentation: An injectable solution to temporal hollowing
What is a temporal augmentation?
A temporal augmentation is a surgical procedure between the eye and the temporal hairline. Patients may consider this procedure if they feel they have lost volume in the temporal area and now have a mild depression or concavity near the hairline. The non-surgical temporal augmentation is a reasonable alternative and can be a more subtle solution to this problem. There is essentially no scarring for this procedure, the turnaround time is very quick, and you’ll see your results immediately.
A non-surgical temporal augmentation – or “temple injection” – takes away the anxiety associated with surgery and provides added comfort knowing this procedure can be done in an office setting in less than an hour.
A more aesthetically pleasing profile can be achieved non-surgically by using a filler to the temporal area. A temporal augmentation can also be done surgically using a fat transfer.
Dermal filler for Temples
At Bellissimo Plastic Surgery & Medi Spa we use hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvederm, Voluma, and Restylane, as it is naturally found in the body, to replace lost volume and contour the temples.
It is also common for patients to pair other facial injections when treating the temple area for a complete facial rejuvenation. These additional non-surgical procedures may include cheekbone injections, under eye filler, a non-surgical rhinoplasty, and even lip fillers.

Fat Grafting for Temples
Fat grafting has also been shown to be an effective method of improving the appearance of hollow temples. Fat grafting, sometimes referred to as a fat transfer or multi-level fat grafting, is a surgical procedure in which the doctor removes fat from a location in your lower body through liposuction and then processes and injects that fat into the face to fill and contour hollow, sunken areas.
Who is a Candidate for Temporal Filler?
A good candidate for a temporal augmentation is someone who is unhappy with the appearance of their forehead or experiencing a hollow temple. Hollow temples are a sign of aging where the upper face appears to be pinched and the brows appear short. This is often due to the loss of volume and fat/muscle in that area.
Most patients that come to our Pittsburgh and Monroeville locations are often concerned that they need a smoother appearance between the orbital and cheekbones all the way to the hairline.
A temple filler will essentially rejuvenate the upper face, improving and softening the area of the face around the hairline.
How long with the results last?
This will depend on the individual patient as well as the specific facial filler used, however, most injectable filler treatments used with temporal hollowing last an average of 8-12 months.
