October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so we decided to dedicate our announcement section to bring awareness to some of the available resources that may be helpful to you or someone you love.
Cleaning for a Reason
Cleaning for A Reason is a nonprofit organization that serves all of the United States and Canada. Their mission is to give the gift of free house cleaning to women undergoing treatment for any type of cancer. Their goal is to let these brave and strong women focus on their health and treatment while they focus on, and take away the worry and work of, cleaning their homes– free of charge.
Our Clubhouse
Their mission is to create welcoming communities of support for everyone currently living with cancer-adults, teens, and children- along with their families. Their philosophy is that the members are the experts, Our Clubhouse is the place where they can share wisdom, experiences, laughter and tears. Staff and volunteers create an environment that encourages and invites members to come together and learn from one another on how best to live with cancer, no matter the outcome. Our Clubhouse has a Pittsburgh and Westmoreland County location.
Athleta Active Wear Empower Pad Friendly Bras
With locations both in Pittsburgh at Ross Park Mall and on Walnut Street in Shadyside, the athletic apparel company Athleta carries a line called Empower Pad-Friendly Bras. Inspired and co-created with breast cancer survivors, their post-mastectomy bra and their super light-weight prosthetic inserts are designed to ensure comfort and confidence.
Nordstrom Breast Prosthesis Program
Nordstrom Breast Prosthesis Program provides the following items and services, which are available in their comfortable, private Lingerie departments (selection may vary by store):
- Breast forms for mastectomies, lumpectomies and reconstructive breast surgery
- Post-mastectomy camisoles and bras
- Free pocketing on any bras purchased from Nordstrom
The Cancer Support Community
The Cancer Support Community mission is to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community.
Reach to Recovery
Reach to Recovery is with the American Cancer Society and is available to help people cope with their breast cancer experience as early as the first possibility of a diagnosis and continuing for as long as breast cancer remains a personal concern to them. They want to be there as they know finding out that you have breast cancer can make you feel overwhelmed, vulnerable, and alone. Suddenly having to learn about complex medical treatments and trying to choose the best one can also be stressful during this time.
Cancer Be Glammed
Cancer Be Glammed empowers women to recover with dignity, positive self-esteem, and personal style. This site was launched to help prepare women for the non-medical, appearance- related side effects of surgery and treatment, and to provide them with easy-access to fashionable recovery products and lifestyle solutions. And for family and friends who want to show their support, they feature thoughtful gifts that women in treatment will use and appreciate.
BreastCancer.org
A patient-focused resource for breast health and breast cancer information and support. BreastCancer.org engages, educates, and empowers people with their expert information and dynamic peer support community to help them make the best decisions for their lives.
Living Beyond Breast Cancer
Living Beyond Breast Cancer is designed to provide programs and services to help people whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer with a goal to provide information, community and support that you can trust, is easy for you to access and respectful of you and your situation. All of their resources are carefully and frequently reviewed by some of the country’s leading healthcare experts and informed by people living with breast cancer.
Susan Koman Organization
Susan Koman addresses breast cancer on multiple fronts such as research, community health, global outreach and public policy initiatives in order to make the biggest impact against this disease. Their vision is a world without breast cancer. Their mission, to save lives by meeting the most critical needs in our communities and investing in research to not only prevent but to cure breast cancer.
Young Survival Coalition
Young Survival Coalition (YSC) strengthens the community, addresses the unique needs, amplifies the voice and improves the quality of life of young adults affected by breast cancer, locally, nationally and internationally.
Breast Cancer Support for Men
Although breast cancer in men is very rare, men can still receive a diagnosis of breast cancer. Information and support can be found at the sites listed below:
