Earlobe Reduction Surgery
In the UK, Earlobe Reduction Surgery has been an up-and-coming trend in plastic surgery that has moved its way into the United States. Often times, the earlobes are overlooked, but reducing the size of torn or enlarged earlobes is a fairly quick procedure.
Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Antimarino offers both reduction of protruding ears as well as earlobe reduction surgery in Pittsburgh, PA. Earlobe reduction surgery differs from otoplasty in the sense that general ear surgery encompasses the treatment of overly large ears or protruding ears, while earlobe reduction is typically performed on patients that have experienced a tear or slit in the ears from wearing heavy or dangling earrings. Some younger patients seek ear repairs after years of stretching their earlobes out with wide gauges.
Kris Jenner, the matriarch of the Kardashian family, underwent earlobe reduction surgery on an episode of Keeping Up the Kardashian’s airing in January 2018. Kris said that all she wanted was “cute ears” noting, “I learned that your nose and your ears keep growing your whole life. I think that the decision to do something about my ever-changing ears is suddenly a priority.”
What Can I Expect from my Earlobe Reduction Surgery?
There are two possible techniques involved in earlobe reduction surgery.
- Edge excision involves drawing a line exactly marking the new desired earlobe size and shape. The outside tissue line is removed and the remaining edges are repaired.
- Wedge excision involves a vertical incision along the earlobe which leaves a vertical scar that may be more visible. This technique is popular for patients who want a torn earlobe, or attached earlobe repaired.
Surgery: The Earlobe Reduction surgery is an outpatient procedure, so you will be in and out of your surgery in one day – sometimes in less than an hour. It is performed under local anesthesia.
After Surgery: Most patients say that this procedure is not painful, but if you find a slight discomfort, taking Ibuprofen or Aspirin will help relieve it. Bandages are worn for less than 24 hours.
