Q & A: Injectables Edition
Posted January 30, 2019
New patients in the medi spa often have a lot of questions when they inquire about injectable fillers. We asked Dr. Antimarino and our nurse injector, Pamela, to answer a few of them.
What can I do if I don’t like my injectable results after treatment?
Dr. Antimarino’s Response: We encourage each patient we see to discuss their desired results with the provider and ask questions before they begin their treatment. A consultation is also the perfect time for our provider to assess the patient and review the products they feel will help the patient meet their desired goals. There are many different types of dermal fillers available on the market, some have a hyaluronic acid base, others may contain collagen or a non-HA base. Only dermal fillers that have hyaluronic acid as their base can be controlled with an enzymatic agent, hyaluronidase, that can be injected directly into the area to dissolve or break down the dermal filler. The products we use in our office contain a hyaluronic base, therefore, they can be dissolved if needed.
What do I do if I feel small lumps or bumps under the skin after having an injectable filler procedure?
Pamela’s Response: Typically, I tell patients within the first two weeks they may feel some very small lumps after their procedure. It is a temporary reaction to the product and will dissipate over time. The area may be gently massaged to help soften the injection sites and improve contour. This may best be done after a warm shower or bath when the body temperature is warmed.
What is the most important thing to address when considering an injectable procedure?
Dr. Antimarino’s Response: We are passionate about educating our patients and strive to make sure that each patient understands the procedure, recovery, and risks involved prior to consenting to treatment. One safety measure we teach is to ensure that the injector is properly trained to navigate the facial anatomy and that they use the proper injection techniques. We encourage open dialogue with each provider and discuss all available treatment options to help a patient achieve their desired goals. Ask questions of your provider, view photos, and discuss the desired expectations before the cap is ever off the needle.
