Q&A with Dr. Antimarino: Selfie Help!

Help!
I took a selfie the other day and I’ve noticed I’ve got a waddle that won’t go away!
There is skin hanging below my chin that I’ve never seen before. Is there anything I can do to improve this or make it go away?
Dr. Antimarino’s Response
Thank you for your question. This is a very common complaint from both women and men as they reach their late 40’s and early 50’s. The first signs of aging are commonly seen around the eyes and the neck. Surprisingly, this is becoming the most common age group for neck lift and facelift procedures.
Presently there are no non-invasive procedures such as a laser or skin care treatment that can effectively treat the waddle or excess skin under the chin. Unfortunately, the solution is a surgical procedure to remove the excess skin. This is done as an outpatient procedure and requires 1-2 weeks of downtime. An incision is made around the ears and possibly a small incision under the chin to remove the excess skin and create a smooth contour to the neck and jawline. The surgical scars are hidden in the creases and curvatures of the ears. The patient is discharged with a head wrap to be worn overnight with an office follow up appointment scheduled for the following day. Most patients are back to work in a week to 10 days and able to exercise in 3 weeks.
