The Two Most Common Concerns Following Pregnancy and Weight Loss
Posted April 24, 2019
The Loss of Volume and Change of Shape to the Breast
With a loss of volume and a change of shape to the breast, there are two options available for correction: a breast lift to change the shape of the breast and a breast augmentation to change the volume. Many women want the combination of procedures to change both the volume and shape of the breast. There are multiple types of breast lift techniques depending upon the amount of change necessary to create a more balanced shape. The most common lift procedure involves an incision around the areola and a vertical incision underneath the breast. The scars are fine lines and fade to white typically within 3-5 months.
An augmentation procedure will create volume and restore or create projection to the breast. It can create fullness in the upper part of the breast that a natural breast does not have. Sizing for breast implants can be done during the consultation using silicone sizers and a sports bra. It has been shown to be an accurate reflection of the patient’s surgical outcome.
The Inability to Control the Mommy Pooch and the Excess Skin on the Stomach Through Diet and Exercise
Many women become frustrated after pregnancies or massive weight loss when they try to re-tone their abdomen only to find minimal improvement, usually less than desired. Women with multiple pregnancies generally have a more difficult time restoring their pre-pregnancy abdomen. The loss of elasticity in the skin and being overstretched during pregnancy or following a large weight gain affects the muscle wall and the skin which are only able to minimally recover. At this point, exercise and dieting are of no further benefit and the solution becomes surgical. The mommy pooch is typically laxity of the abdominal muscle wall and laxity of the skin which may be treated with a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty. Post-pregnancy there may also be an excess of fatty tissue that is resistant to diet and exercise. This tissue is best contoured with liposuction and can be done in combination with the tummy tuck procedure.
A “mommy makeover” is classically an abdominal procedure combined with a breast procedure to restore a woman’s body to her pre-pregnancy shape. This could entail a breast lift and/or augmentation with a tummy tuck and/or liposuction. A consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon will determine the best procedure to meet your aesthetic goals.
