Three Options for an Aging Face
Posted March 27, 2019
Aging is inevitable. When we look in the mirror, the face we see back may not be the face we are expecting to see. Photographs can be a turning point in the realization that we are not as young as we feel. Aging around the eyes and neck are usually the first signs of aging followed by changes in the cheeks and mouth. What can we do to treat the signs of aging? Depending upon the age of the patient, tissue and skin integrity, and existing signs of aging, there are three options available for correction. These can be used independently or in combination to achieve your desired aesthetic result.
Injectables
Injectables have become the first step in combating the aging process. For patients with minimal signs of aging and good elasticity of the skin, there are many different products with different consistencies to replace volume, improve facial contours and temporarily improve facial wrinkles. These products have quick results, minimal downtime and are easily accessible. The results may last 9-18 months depending upon the product used and the location of the injections. The price point also varies depending upon the product used and the amount required to achieve the desired result.
Neck Lift
A patient with aging isolated to the lower face and neck would benefit the most from a neck lift. In these cases, the signs of aging are more advanced, and the desired result cannot be reached alone with an injectable procedure. A neck lift consists of correcting the jowls and the neck laxity while also removing the excess skin. Incisions are isolated to the earlobe and behind the ear. A neck lift can also address removing fat under the chin if needed.
Facelift
For patients that have aging in the cheek and mouth area in addition to the neck, a standard facelift would be the treatment of choice. This is the patient who, when asked about the area that bothers them the most, responds by pulling back on their face or neck, indicating they wish to re-establish the fullness in their cheeks, decrease the lines around the mouth, correct jowling and neck laxity. Incisions are hidden in the contours of the ear and extend to the hairline behind the ears. A facelift procedure is customized for each individual patient to meet their desired goals. The results of this procedure may last 8-10 years.
