LN from Pittsburgh asks:
What is Dermaplaning?
Dr. A: Dermaplaning or blading, is a non-invasive skin treatment that is used to promote skin rejuvenation. Dermaplaning is similar to microdermabrasion as it removes the top layer of the epidermis to eliminate dead skin cells and correct minor surface imperfections. Microdermabrasion is often confused with the dermaplaning treatment. The primary difference between the two is the removal of the fine, facial hair (vellus) while exfoliating the skin with dermaplaning. This procedure is typically performed by a licensed aesthetician and utilizes a sterile surgical blade. The blade is used in a motion similar to shaving and painlessly removes the dry, dead skin to reveal new, healthy skin cells. This superficial resurfacing removes the soft, fine facial hair that can trap dirt and oil, reduces recent acne scars and helps promote deeper product penetration. A dermaplaning session is a perfect way to prime your skin for further treatments such as a facial or peel. This is also a great treatment for pregnant or nursing patients who want a deep exfoliation but do not want to use peeling agents on their skin.
Many patients are often concerned that the fine hair will grow back darker, heavier and coarser after removing with dermaplaning. As long as the hair is fine, superficial facial hair (vellus) it will grow back as it was prior to treatment.
