Face Lift

Procedure Process
& Ideal Candidates

A common misconception with patients is that a Facelift procedure treats the entire face. A Facelift procedure targets the aging of the lower half of the face and neck area. The eyes, eyebrows, and forehead are not addressed but can be combined with the facelift procedure if needed. A Facelift is primarily done to restore and tighten the cheeks, lower jaw, and neck area.

There are two main reasons for the effects of aging on our faces. First, the layer of tissue that lies between the facial muscles and the skin begins to soften and slides downward. This leads to the deepening of lines around the mouth, chin, and jawline, and loss of volume to the cheek area. The second reason is that skin loses elasticity as we age. This is the cause of sagging in the neck area.

What To Consider

Schedule Your Face Lift Consultation

During your consultation, Dr. Antimarino will walk you through a series of questions to determine your concerns, goals and expectations. Dr. Antimarino will discuss with you any medical conditions you may have or treatments you are going through, what medications you may be taking, and any previous surgeries. Be prepared to discuss outcomes of a face lift procedure and to have the doctor take photos for a more accurate evaluation.

Pre-Op Care

Depending upon a patient’s age and medical condition there may be preoperative laboratory testing required. This will need to be completed within 2-4 weeks of surgery and is typically covered by the patient’s insurance. Patients are asked to maintain their usual activity level and body weight from the time of consultation to their surgical date. Patients are required to stop smoking, vaping, and the use of nicotine patches, gum, and marijuana one month prior to surgery and a minimum of one month post-surgery. Patients are also required to stop using weight loss medications 2 weeks prior to their surgery. Surgery may be canceled if guidelines are not followed.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Face Lift, or rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at reducing signs of aging in the face and neck. It typically involves lifting and tightening the skin and underlying tissue to create a more youthful appearance.

Good candidates for a Facelift are generally in good health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about the outcome. They typically have noticeable signs of aging in the face and neck, such as sagging skin or deep creases.

A Facelift can improve visible signs of aging by lifting sagging skin, reducing wrinkles, and enhancing facial contours. Results can vary depending on individual factors like skin elasticity and lifestyle habits.

Recovery time after a Facelift varies, but typically involves mild swelling, bruising, and discomfort for the first few days.  Most patients can return to normal activities within 2-3 weeks, although strenuous activities should be avoided for several weeks.

Like any surgical procedure, facelifts carry risks such as infection, bleeding, and scarring. Choosing a qualified and experienced surgeon can minimize these risks.

While a Facelift can  turn back the clock on aging, it does not stop the natural aging process. However, the results can last for 8-10 years, and many patients undergo additional non-surgical treatments to maintain their appearance over time.

Depending on  individual goals and the extent of aging signs, alternatives to a facelift may include injectable treatments (like Botox or dermal fillers), laser skin resurfacing, or non-surgical skin tightening procedures. These options can provide temporary improvements without the need for surgery.

What Our Patients Are Saying

Surgery & Post-Op Care

A Facelift uses incisions in front of and extending behind the ears to tighten the skin and soft tissue of the face and neck. The skin is then re-draped and any excess skin is removed. The benefit is a rejuvenated and natural appearance.

A Facelift is is performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia. There is minimal pain, swelling or bruising associated with this procedure.

Facelifts are done as an outpatient procedure. Patients are sent home with a head wrap which will be removed the following day in the office. Patients may shower once the headwrap is removed. Sutures are removed one week after surgery. There are no drains used in this procedure. The downtime is approximately 2 weeks and most patients may return to exercise in approximately 3 weeks. The scars may appear as a light pink color for several weeks but can be covered with makeup after the first week.
