Tummy Tuck

Procedure Process
& Ideal Candidates

An Abdominoplasty, otherwise known as a Tummy Tuck, is a common procedure that tightens the abdominal wall and removes excess skin. This results in a tighter, flatter appearance of the abdominal wall. Even individuals of otherwise normal body weight and proportion can develop an abdomen that protrudes or is loose and sagging. The most common causes of this include aging, heredity, pregnancy, prior surgery, and significant fluctuations in weight.

These factors can also lead to increased laxity and possible separation of the muscles of the abdominal wall causing a “pooch” in the lower abdomen which can be addressed during a Tummy Tuck procedure.

What To Consider

Schedule Your Tummy Tuck Consultation

During your consultation, Dr. Antimarino will walk you through a series of questions to determine your concerns, goals and expectations. Dr. Antimarino will discuss with you any medical conditions you may have or treatments you are going through, what medications you may be taking, and any previous surgeries. Be prepared to discuss outcomes of a tummy tuck procedure and to have the doctor take photos for a more accurate evaluation.

Pre-Op Care

Depending upon a patient’s age and medical condition there may be preoperative laboratory testing required. This will need to be completed within 2-4 weeks of surgery and is typically covered by the patient’s insurance. Patients are asked to maintain their usual activity level and body weight from the time of consultation to their surgical date. Patients are required to stop smoking, vaping, and the use of nicotine patches, gum, and marijuana one month prior to surgery and a minimum of one month post-surgery. Patients are also required to stop using weight loss medications 2 weeks prior to their surgery. Surgery may be canceled if guidelines are not followed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most results will last indefinitely, however, pregnancy, fluctuations in weight, aging and hormones can affect the skin and muscle over time.

A patient is required to wear their compression garments for 4-6 weeks to help with swelling and give support to the healing tissues.

A Tummy Tuck scar sits low on the abdomen so it is hidden below a standard bathing suit or undergarments.

A Tummy Tuck can be combined with many other procedures such as a Breast Augmentation, a Breast Lift, or a Breast Reduction. This is commonly referred to as a Mommy Makeover. It can also be combined with Liposuction or an Arm Lift.

Pregnancy and weight loss are the most common causes of excess skin and weakening of the muscle

A patient is required to refrain from exercise and housework for 3 weeks. Light lifting and exercise can begin after 3 weeks. All activity resumes between 6-8 weeks after surgery.

What Our Patients Are Saying

Surgery & Post-Op Care

A tummy tuck procedure is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. A full tummy tuck requires a horizontally-oriented incision just above the pubic hairline. Once the excess skin is lifted, the underlying weakened abdominal muscles are repaired to flatten the abdomen. Then, the excess skin is removed to complete the recontouring of the abdominal wall.

The patient is sent home with 2 drains that are removed based upon their drainage output.  Drainage output is measured by the patient twice a day and the results are reported at the 1st post operative appointment.  Drains are typically removed within the 1st week.  A compression binder or garment is worn for 4-6 weeks after surgery. Exercise and most activities are resumed by 3 weeks.
