Breast Reaugmentation

Procedure Process
& Ideal Candidates

Secondary Breast Augmentation, or Breast Reaugmentation is a surgery that is performed to either replace or remove a patient’s current implants. The longer a woman has breast implants, the more likely she is to experience local complications which may be the result of the following issues: Capsular contraction, Deflation, Malposition, Drooping or Breast Ptosis, Aging Breast Tissue or Atrophy, Effects of Weight Fluctuations.

Upon evaluation by a board-certified plastic surgeon, these concerns may be addressed and the treatment plan to resolve an implant issue may be replacement or removal. The evolution of implants allows the patient to choose from several different styles and sizes should she want to replace them. If choosing to have them removed, the patient may notice some changes to their natural breasts as the tissue and skin may not be as tight due to the natural aging process.

What To Consider

Schedule Your Breast
Reaugmentation Consultation

During your consultation, Dr. Antimarino will walk you through a series of questions to determine your concerns, goals and expectations. Dr. Antimarino will discuss with you any medical conditions you may have or treatments you are going through, what medications you may be taking, and any previous surgeries. Be prepared to discuss outcomes of a breast reaugmentation procedure and to have the doctor take photos for a more accurate evaluation.

Pre-Op Care

Depending upon a patient’s age and medical condition there may be preoperative laboratory testing required. This will need to be completed within 2-4 weeks of surgery and is typically covered by the patient’s insurance. Patients are asked to maintain their usual activity level and body weight from the time of consultation to their surgical date. Patients are required to stop smoking, vaping, and the use of nicotine patches, gum, and marijuana one month prior to surgery and a minimum of one month post-surgery. Patients are also required to stop using weight loss medications 2 weeks prior to their surgery. Surgery may be canceled if guidelines are not followed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Secondary Breast Augmentation, or Breast Re-Augmentation, is a surgery that is performed to either replace or remove a patient’s current implants.

Your breasts and body change over time despite having had an augmentation so the size and shape of the breasts may need to be revised to balance with your current body habitus.

The earliest would be around 9 months but the best time would be after the first year.

A breast reaugmentation can correct asymmetry or unevenness.  It is helpful to Dr. Antimarino to have your previous breast implant information ie: volume, style, manufacturer.

In most cases a reaugmentation has minimal pain but the physical limitations are the same as a breast augmentation.

There are minimal risks and complications, the most common include malposition and contracture.

In many cases the scarring follows the original augmentation incision sites.

What Our Patients Are Saying

Surgery & Post-Op Care

Breast Reaugmentation is an outpatient procedure and is unique to each individual patient. It is performed to correct or improve a patient’s current augmentation, therefore, it is not as simple as replacing an older product with a newer version. The implant “pocket” may need to be reshaped or modified to create a new “pocket” to fit the updated implant. Dr. Antimarino has designed a technique that will downsize the pocket circumferentially and allow for more projection to the breast. This procedure is called the “Projection Pocket” and is used to increase projection and modify shape in the capsular tissue during a re-augmentation. The procedure generally lasts approximately 1 ½ -2 hours and is done under general anesthesia in an accredited outpatient surgical facility.

The patient is discharged with a light dressing and a support bra. The bra is to be worn approximately 2 weeks. Patients may return to work in approximately 5-7 days and resume light exercise within 3 weeks (may vary depending on the job). It is important to address any abnormal changes in your breasts with Dr. Antimarino and continue to monitor your breast implants for the rest of your life.
