Four Facts about Implant-Based Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction can be accomplished using either an implant or a woman’s own tissue.

Currently, in the United States, the implant-based reconstruction is the most common method used to reconstruct a breast. After the initial diagnosis of breast cancer, a woman should be offered an opportunity to discuss breast reconstruction with a plastic surgeon. Every woman has the right to ask for this consultation if it is not offered to them. It is at this time that a woman will be informed of her reconstruction options and she can choose which of these, if she chooses reconstruction, is best for her. Breast cancer treatment is a team effort and should include the primary care physician, the oncologist, the general surgeon and possibly a plastic surgeon and a radiation oncologist.

Implant-based reconstruction gives an excellent, natural result.

Due to improvements in techniques and products over the years, implant-based surgery now gives a very natural aesthetic outcome.

Implant-based reconstruction allows a woman to return to work and her lifestyle much quicker than tissue reconstruction.

This technique, started at the time of the mastectomy, requires, on average, a single night stay in the hospital versus 4-5 days in the hospital using the tissue-based reconstruction. Most women may return to work in approximately one week versus 4-6 weeks with a tissue-based reconstruction. Exercise is possible within three weeks for implant-based versus four to six weeks with tissue based.

Implant-based reconstruction does not interfere with any oncologic treatment requirements following the mastectomy.

Women can undergo chemotherapy and radiation if needed without any detriment to the efficacy of those treatments. Future tumor surveillance is not inhibited following implant-based reconstruction.
